Forbes Sang
Forbes Sang is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Toronto. He received his BFA from OCAD University in 2021 and was recently accepted to NSCAD University for his MFA. Sang's artistic practice centers on the racial conflicts within his identity as a Canadian-born Jamaican, dissecting themes of race, familial relations, and selfhood. Through photography, collage, and painting, he critiques how race and class shape the spaces he navigates and constructs identities within Western societies. Sang’s work has been acquired by the Royal Bank of Canada. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions, including Ambiguity: An Exploration of Identity at BAND in 2022, Funhouse at the Art Gallery of Hamilton in 2022, and his second solo exhibition, Playbook, at Cry Baby Gallery in 2024.
Artwork statement
After returning to his hometown, Forbes found himself immersed in the abundant wildlife and tranquil surroundings. Among them, the cardinal particularly caught his attention. For many, the cardinal symbolizes a departed loved one watching over them. For Forbes, it embodies the spirit of his late grandfather, who passed away during his childhood. When given the opportunity to create a Lite-Brite artwork, Forbes instinctively chose to depict his grandfather—a figure who consistently provided guidance and support to him and his family during their darkest times.
